  1. Believe it or not, it will help you live longer

    Eating spicy food can actually help you to live longer. A study of over 16,000 American adults found that those who regularly ate hot peppers reduced their risk of dying by a staggering 13 percent. Factors that were considered during the study included sex, age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and even if they smoked!  The large range of different characteristics were taken into account to give a fair study across the board no matter your lifestyle, circumstances or possible conditions.

    This isn’t the first time a study like this has been done. A similar study carried out in China from 2015 showed very similar results where people who had spicy food once or twice a week saw a reduced overall risk of death by 10 percent. The study went on to show that if you ate spicy food every day the risk reduced by 14 percent.

    Capsaicin is the key here. It promotes the stimulation of brown fat that helps in the speeding up of your metabolism, an essential factor when attempting to shed those unwanted pounds. Capsaicin is an active component of the Chilli Pepper.

    Simplified peppers can be a real ‘waistline warriors’ and it has been proven to help against cravings. Research carried out by the University of Purdue showed that eating red peppers could help manage your appetite and even help burn more calories after a meal.  If you don’t consume Capsaicin regularly these effects will be even more.

    One small change isn’t going to do a lot but a couple might. This could be as easy as substituting certain foods in your diet for other options. So why not try putting actual chilli’s in your chilli con carne next time. You could even use turkey mince instead of beef if you really want to push the boat out.

    Yes, it can help with pain relief! Capsaicin has shown the ability to dull the throb of aches and pains. Most commonly the nerve fibres that end in the skin or mucous membranes. Substance P is a chemical in the brain that Capsaicin targets specifically; this is the chemical that comes into play whenever we get hurt.  Who knew spicy food of all things could have all these health benefits!
