The Winter Olympics 2018: Extreme Sports and Life Insurance

Competing against the snow Kings and Queens of Norway, Germany and Canada - it’s a pipe dream for Great Britain to get to the top of the medal table in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

It’s been exhilarating to watch all of the unique events at Pyeongchang and everyone’s bursting with pride at the fact that we’ve remained graceful and hard-working throughout - getting four medals so far. Go on Team GB!

But wait - what about life insurance? And who’s even thinking about it amongst all the excitement?

We at Quick Quote Protect are! And we hope all the athletes have policies in place to protect them and their loved ones, too.

As exciting as it’s been to watch the Winter Olympics so far, it’s got us thinking a little on the cynical side - “What if something went wrong?”

GB’s Medallists

  • Dom Parsons broke the ice by achieving GB’s first bronze medal in the men’s skeleton.
  • Isabel Atkin won us another bronze in the women’s slopestyle.
  • Lizzy Yarnold got the skeleton gold title for the second time running after her first in Sochi 2014.
  • Laura Deas followed two places behind Yarnold and took another bronze for Great Britain.

They’ve all done us Brits proud!

But few of us think about injuries and things going wrong for the athletes as they set out to conquer their dreams in the Winter Olympics.

Take Elise Christie, whose Olympic dream was over after she crashed on the ice in the 1500m semi-final and was taken into hospital – thankfully she was okay, but it could have been a lot worse.

What if she’d had a severe injury and wasn’t able to skate again? This is where insurance like critical illness cover could come in and help financially.

Aside from the falls, the Olympians make extreme sports look easy and so many of us are now inspired to book a skiing trip, start snowboarding, go whizzing head-first on a toboggan or do a ‘Cool Runnings’ by getting stuck into a bit of bobsleighing.

But hang fire! Make sure you have life insurance in place first and that you’re covered for any extreme sports you might be getting involved in.

Looking After Your Loved Ones and You

Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, but if something did go wrong and the worst should happen, would your loved ones be covered financially? Having the best life insurance policy in place wouldn’t ease their grief, but it could help to eliminate the stress of having to take care of any expenses left behind. And if you do take part in any extreme sports, then our advisors would help you by finding the best bespoke policy for you.

On the other hand, if you became critically ill with a specified illness because of an accident, critical illness cover could help you financially if you were left unable to work or cover any medical costs. This can be added on to a standard life insurance policy, too, so considering both would be a sensible option if you partake in any extreme sports.*

Age, Health and Life Insurance

It’s interesting to witness the range of age, ability and agility in these Winter Olympic events. We’ve seen superb snowboarding skills so far – even someone as young as France’s Julia Pereira de Sousa Mabileau, just 16, who took silver in the snowboard cross final and blew those of us watching away.

On the contrast, you have curling – sweeping the floor with a broomstick for a few minutes? Piece of cake! But actually, curlers need to be physically fit to pump their arms as fast as they do. The oldest Olympic curler this year is 51 - the fitter the better, especially for life insurance!

Let’s not forget about other extreme sports that take place during the year - brave young racer Billy Monger, only 17 at the time, had his legs amputated after a horrific high-speed crash in the F4 race last April. He announced at the beginning of this year that he’s going to return to the track and is aiming for Formula 1 – now 18, he’ll be getting a life insurance policy in place for sure.

While under-18s can’t easily get a policy of their own, they are covered by their parents’ critical illness cover at no extra cost.

No matter what you do or what you’re into – the younger and healthier you are, the cheaper the insurance will be. It’s important to get advice on extreme sports insurance, even as young as 18, if you’re into any adventurous activities and planning on making the next Winter Olympics!
