October the 11th is World Obesity Day, it's a day to spread awareness of the growing issue in the world. Many people take to social media to call for large corporations and governments to do more.
More than one-third of British adults are considered to be obese and more than 1 in 20 adults have extreme obesity. A study showed that in 2015 the UK had the fifth highest rate of obesity in Europe.
Because of this, we have decided to write an article helping people understand what BMI (Body Mass Index) is and why it is important when it comes to getting Life Insurance.
In recent years there have been stories of people being refused for Life Insurance because there have been classed as obese due to their BMI. So let’s start there with what exactly BMI is and how it's measured.
It’s really simple, your BMI is your weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in metres) then from that answer you divide your height again to get your BMI.
The number you are then left with will fit into one of the following categories.
These are common brackets used across the board for deciding what heading you come under.
Insurers use BMI to help them decide how much your premiums will be. BMI is used as an indicator for Life Insurance providers to see how ‘at risk’ a possible client could be.
A high BMI score could mean someone is overweight which might mean they might be at risk from serious illnesses like diabetes which in turn could reduce their life expectancy.
So if your BMI is more than 30 but less than 33 you can expect to pay 25% more than what a standard monthly premium could be.
To put that into perspective if the normal premium was £10.00 you could expect to pay £12.50 per month instead.
If you’re BMI is more than 33 many insurers will still be able to offer you a policy but as they would see the risk as being higher your premiums would also go up.
